British Society For Eighteenth-Century Studies
PostGraduate and Early-Career Scholars' Conference

July 13-14, 2012

Universidad de Salamanca, Spain

'Speculations'

The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies’ annual postgraduate and early-career scholars’ conference provides a forum for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers working on all aspects of the history, literature and culture of the long eighteenth century. In 2012 our conference will be held in affiliation with the University of Salamanca in Spain.

We invite proposals for individual papers addressing any aspect of the long eighteenth century. We also welcome proposals for fully comprised panels of three or four papers, roundtable discussions or other ‘alternative format’ sessions. Papers may examine the history, literature or culture of Britain or Spain, but also the rest of Europe and the wider world. The official languages of the conference are English and Spanish, and proposals may be submitted for papers or panels in either of these languages.

The theme of this year’s conference will be ‘Speculations’. We would thus particularly welcome proposals that consider eighteenth-century speculations of any kind, including but not limited to:

  • Financial speculation: profit, investment and bubbles.
  • Intellectual speculation: hypothesis, conjecture and discovery.
  • Visual speculation: examination, observation and performance.
  • Philosophical speculation: theory, probability and experience.
  • The relationship between theory and practice in any eighteenth-century science or field.
  • The role of speculation in the study of any aspect of the long eighteenth century.

Log in on the BSECS website to submit a proposal.

The deadline for proposals is Friday 18th May 2012

Delegates should note that accommodation for the conference, in university halls, is limited and must be prebooked in advance. The deadline for accommodation bookings is Thursday 31st May 2012.
