Call for Papers

The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the Sociedad Española de Estudios del Siglo XVIII are pleased to announce their first joint conference, to be held in Barcelona in December 2009.

The conference will focus on the full range of contacts and exchanges between the Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, and British and Spanish colonies in the long eighteenth century. Proposals for papers, panels, and round tables are invited on topics such as, but not limited to:

• cultural transfer
• representations of national identities
• the circulation of knowledge, book history, and the periodical press; transfer of scientific instruments and books, technological transfer
• the reception of literary, artistic, and scientific works: translation, imitation, and adaptation
• popular culture and entertainments
• religion
• social networks
• the conditions and modalities of Anglo-Spanish sociability
• trade and finance
• travel, immigration and diasporic communities; Spanish scientists and doctors in the United Kingdom
• cultural institutions (whether scientific, artistic, intellectual, or educational)
• diplomacy and war

Submissions are encouraged from a wide variety of disciplines, as are those taking an interdisciplinary approach. Inquiries are welcomed at any time.

Proposals or abstracts in English, Spanish or Catalan should be sent by 1 April 2009 to:

Submissions should include name, institutional affiliation, and paper, panel or round table title.

Abstracts

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words; reading time for complete panel papers should not exceed twenty minutes and for round table position papers, twelve minutes. No more than four speakers should be listed for a panel proposal and no more than five for a proposed round table. At least one third of each round table will be set aside for open discussion.

Prospective speakers and panel or round table chairs will be notified of a decision by 30 April 2009.
