Submit a Proposal

We welcome proposals for the ISECS International Congress on the Enlightenment, to be held in Edinburgh on 14–19 July, 2019.

The final deadline for submission of papers and panel proposals is Friday 1 February 2019. You will be notified by Friday 15 March 2019 if your proposal has been accepted.

If you are travelling from outside the UK and need an earlier decision, please email the conference organisers at ice@bsecs.org.uk after submitting your proposal. We will do our best to give you a decision within two weeks of your request. Please do not ask for an early decision unless it is absolutely necessary, as your request does create extra work for us.

Bursaries

ISECS is delighted to offer bursaries for Edinburgh Congress participants to cover (partly or totally) the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals.

Submit a Proposal

Delegates to the Congress are required to be a member of the ISECS-affiliated Eighteenth-Century Studies society in their own country, if there is one. To find details of the ISECS-affiliated society in your country, please visit the ISECS website.

  • Please note: proposal submission closes at precisely 23:59 GMT (Edinburgh time) on Friday 1 February 2019.

Enquiries regarding late proposals or any other matters should be directed to the Congress Organising Committee at ice@bsecs.org.uk. Please allow up to seven days for a reply. Please note that all rooms will have data projection.

Please see below for the types of proposals we are currently accepting:

  • Individual papers

Individuals can submit papers which will be allocated to an appropriate panel session, usually of three papers. We will supply a chairperson for these panels. Papers must be no longer than twenty minutes. For guidance, this would normally mean a paper of about 2,500 words in total. You may submit only one proposal.

As well as your personal details, you will be asked for a paper title and abstract (max. 2000 characters).

  • Panels

We strongly encourage the submission of pre-formed panels of usually three but occasionally four papers, along with a pre-assigned chairperson.

    • Papers in a three-paper panel must be no longer than twenty minutes each. This would normally mean each paper should be about 2,500 words in total.
    • Papers in a four-paper panel must be no longer than fifteen minutes each. This would normally mean each paper should be about 2,000 words in total.
    • If you would like to propose a double panel (two panels on the same topic to run consecutively) you may do so. Please submit each panel separately, giving them the same name but number them in the order in which you would them to run (For example, ‘Sewers and Sewerage 1’, ‘Sewers and Sewerage 2’).

As well as personal details, you will be asked for:

    • Panel title
    • Brief description of the proposed panel (max. 2000 characters)
    • Name and contact details of the proposed panel chairperson
    • Name and email address of each speaker
    • Title and abstract for each paper

  • Roundtables

A roundtable is a more informal session in which several speakers deal with a topic followed by extensive audience discussion. Each panellist may wish to begin the session with a short, introductory address; this should last no more than five minutes.

As well as your personal details, you will be asked for:

    • Roundtable title
    • Brief description of the proposed roundtable (max. 2000 characters)
