Adrian Teal will talk about raucous theatre in the age of Johnson, dealing with one of David Garrick’s petty rivalries, and his Shakespeare Jubilee of the 1760s, which put Stratford-upon-Avon on the tourist map. He will also discuss other colourful characters of the acting world, including Charlotte Charke, the tranvestite actress, satirist and theatre impresario; and George Alexander Stevens, a friend of Garrick, who invented a Georgian precursor of Spitting Image.
