A public event designed to highlight the capacity of the Georgian Papers Programme to convene around an issue which is critical to the Georgian period, and to our own. This panel discussion will bring together the Programme’s academic directors Arthur Burns and Karin Wulf with the eighteenth-century historians Barbara Taylor (author of The Last Asylum) and Michael Brown (an expert on 18th-century asylums and medical practice) , Mark Gatiss (the actor who portrayed George III in the recent award-winning production of Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III at Nottingham Playhouse), Adam Penford (artistic director of Nottingham Playhouse who directed the production) and Sir Simon Wessely (president of the Royal College of Medicine and professor of clinical psychiatry at King’s College London). Together they will explore what we now know of George III’s illness, how it speaks to us today and its relevance to our current discussions of mental health.
