A collaborative workshop between the Centres for Eighteenth-century studies at the University of Warwick and the University of Birmingham.
This workshop will explore the ‘associational world’ of the eighteenth-century, focusing on the role of clubs and societies. In the spirit of association, it brings together the Birmingham and Warwick centres for eighteenth-century studies, and the format of the day is designed to encourage discussion and perhaps even the ‘collision of mind with mind’, as William Godwin might put it. With papers focusing on the full range of the long-eighteenth century, and panellists from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds including English, modern-languages, and history, the workshop will touch on a broad range of topics including: the Scriblerus Club, the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, German literary societies, the Birmingham lunar society, political societies of the 1790s, the Manchester Lit & Phil, William Godwin and the Philomatheans, and the Royal Literary Fund.
