Eighteenth Century Ireland Society / Cumann Éire san Ochtú Céad
announces a call for papers for its annual 2013 conference.
2013 marks the tercentenary of the Treaty of Utrecht and the 250th anniversary of the Treaty of Paris, concluding two of the most “global” wars of the eighteenth century. Accordingly, the theme of the conference is “Ireland and Geopolitics” and we welcome especially any papers which treat the Irish eighteenth century within a geopolitical context. The strategic situation of Ireland and the Irish in the eighteenth century is reflected in part by the political significance of canonical authors such as Swift and Burke, but also in terms of the diasporic Irish presence across Europe and the Americas, an influence that helped to determine the shifting balance of power between rival states throughout this period.
However, as usual, papers treating any aspect of Ireland and the Irish in the course of the long eighteenth century will be welcomed. Papers may be presented in either English or Irish.
