After a glittering scientific career, in 1696 Isaac Newton became Warden of the Mint, based at the Tower. England’s currency was then in disarray, not least due to the growing crime of counterfeiting. So began a personal and bitter struggle between Newton and William Chaloner, the greatest forger of them all – as Thomas Levenson (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) relates.
