During the 17th and 18th centuries, the royal bed was a site of utmost political significance. It was the place where newly-weds were bedded, babies were born and ageing monarchs died – events that all had important consequences for the nation. Olivia Fryman will explore these rites of passage, and consider the role of the state bed in defining the fate of the Stuart and Hanoverian monarchies.
