A two-day conference at the University of Leeds, 4 and 5 July 2013, examining all aspects of the interaction between war and Britons in the long eighteenth century.

The conference aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach to the multiple aspects of the interaction between war and Britons. The conference includes papers on all aspects of the relationships between warfare, the armed forces (both the army and the navy), society, and culture in the British Isles during the long eighteenth century. The keynote lecture will be given by Professor Simon Bainbridge (University of Lancaster) on representations and performances of the Battle of Waterloo in the early nineteenth century.

With over 30 speakers the conference brings together scholars looking at politics, the interaction between the armed forces and society, military law, art, material culture, literature, and military identities. Furthermore, the conference is not restricted to wars which involved Britain, and some papers address the reception of conflicts and military events from across the globe in the British Isles.
