Professor Paul Cheney and Dr Alexander Schmidt are holding a three-week NEH Summer Seminar, to be held at the Neubauer Collegium, University of Chicago, 9-27 July 2018.
The title of the Seminar is “Invisible Hands: the Enlightenment Science of Society from Mandeville to Hegel.” The aim of this three-week seminar for University and college professors is to recover the complexity of eighteenth-century attempts to theorize the relation between the imaginary, yet very real (moral) bonds that make up a stable society, and the autonomous individual self. This will be accomplished through a close reading of texts on moral theory, politics, economy, law, and aesthetics. Applications are welcome from political theorists, philosophers, historians, literary scholars, and scholars of religious thought.
The application deadline is 1 March, 2018.

The seminar is open to college and university teachers. There are no restrictions as to academic rank, but three of the sixteen summer scholars chosen will have non-tenure track or otherwise precarious academic positions; up to two graduate students may also be accepted. Regrettably, due to restrictions, only those who have been residing in the U.S. for at least three years may apply.
