II Warsaw Literary Meeting

Deceit and imposture in 18th- and 19th-century British literature

Warsaw Literary Meeting is a series workshops organised by the British 

Studies Centre of the University of Warsaw. The purpose of the workshops 

is to generate discussion and encourage cooperation between 

scholars with diverse research interests. Each workshop 

concentrates on one specific theme in the literary and cultural 

life of the 18th and 19th centuries. 

The topic of the second workshop will be 

“Deceit and imposture in 18th- and 19th century British literature”. 

The workshop will be convened by Jakub Lipski (Kazimierz Wielki 

University, Bydgoszcz) and will be held on November 20, 2014. 

By choosing the form of a workshop, we want to move away from 

the traditional conference format. Speakers will be asked to prepare 

and send their papers (up to 30.000 characters) beforehand to all 

participants. During the workshop each speaker will briefly 

summarise his/her main points, after which all the participants 

will be invited to take part in a discussion. 

The deadline for submitting proposals (about 200 words) is September 20. 

Complete papers will be expected by October 20.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

-mask and disguise in literature
-impostors, tricksters, frauds and masqueraders as literary characters
-hypocrisy and/as civility
-unmasking and detection as plot patterns
-literary forgeries and hoaxes
-writing as masquerade: the politics of pseudonyms and anonymity
-writing li(v)es

We hope that this workshop will be followed by many meetings 

on other subjects. People with ideas for future workshops 

are encouraged to send in their proposals.
