Dissent and the Hanoverian Succession
‘Dissent
and the Hanoverian Succession’ is the tenth annual one-day conference of the Dr Williams’s Centre for Dissenting
Studies, a collaboration between the School of English and Drama, Queen Mary University of London, and Dr Williams’s Library. At the tercentenary
of the succession of George I, the conference will examine the place and views
of religious dissenters in the reigns of Anne and George I.

Fee: £10, or £4 for students, payable at door. Sandwich lunch

There will be four lectures, each followed by discussion:

‘Jacobitism, Dissent and Toleration’
-Dr Benjamin Bankhurst (Institute for Historical Research, London), ‘Irish
Dissent, the Penal Laws and the Legacy of Jonathan Swift During the Reigns of
Anne and George I’
-Professor Bob Owens (University of Bedfordshire),
‘“But what if the Queen should die?”: Defoe, the Dissenters, and the
Succession’
