PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AT 200 STUDY DAY

Join us at Chawton House Library for a study day to celebrate Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, published 200 years ago in January 1813. Four scholars of Austen will discuss her best-loved novel, with a variety of talks focusing on Austen’s style, on reception and legacy, on her life and times, and on twentieth and twenty-first century adaptations. The day will conclude at the Jane Austen House Museum, with a selection of readings from the novel by Elizabeth Garvie, the actress who played Elizabeth Bennet in the 1980 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.

Speakers’ brief biographies:

Paula Byrne, fellow of Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, is the author of Jane Austen and the Theatre (2002) and of a forthcoming biography of Austen (2013).
Shelley Cobb, University of Southampton, is the author of many articles on screen adaptions of Austen’s novels. Her book Adaptation and Post-Feminist Filmmaking will be published in 2014.
Kathryn Sutherland, St Anne’s College, University of Oxford, is the author of Jane Austen’s Textual Lives: From Aeschylus to Bollywood (2005) and of Jane Austen’s Fiction Manuscripts: A Digital and Print Edition (to be published by Oxford University Press).
Bharat Tandon, University of East Anglia, is the author of Jane Austen and the Morality of Conversation (2003) and a judge for the 2012 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
