Reading between the Lines: Eighteenth-Century Journals and Romantic Letters, 1740-1830

A one-day workshop hosted by the North East Forum in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Studies

Journals and letters are the most intimate of all forms of literature. They tell us that history was once real life. Join us for a one-day workshop which explores the journals and letters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These documents were sometimes hidden from contemporaries and speak directly to us today. We shall consider the rich variety of journals and letters in the period, and how they may be used in modern academic research.

Our keynote speaker is the historian of feminism Jane Rendall, who will discuss the correspondence of three Edinburgh authors, Elizabeth Hamilton, Eliza Fletcher, and Anne Grant. Panellists include Pamela Clemit (on Godwin), Amy Culley (on Helen Maria Williams), Leigh Wetherall Dickson (on men’s diaries), Gillian Skinner (on Fanny Burney), Richard Terry (on Sterne), and Penelope Wilson (on Elizabeth Bond).
