Ridiculous Romantics Back

Free tickets can be accessed here.

This event is sponsored by the AHRC-funded project ‘The Romantic Ridiculous’.

Romantic poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are celebrated for their solemn and spiritual connection to the landscape, from the summits of mountains to fields of dancing daffodils. This aesthetic of lofty genius and sublime scene has been one that has endured for hundreds of years – but should we really take the Romantic writers so seriously?

Drs Andrew McInnes and Rita Dashwood join Principal Curator Jeff Cowton to explore the silly side of Romanticism. They will discuss their project ‘The Romantic Ridiculous’, which takes an alternative approach to representing the lives and works of Romantic-period writers and artists, and uncover the absurd as they take a close-up look at objects from the Wordsworth Trust’s collection.

This event accompanies ‘Ridiculous Romantic Portraits’ at Wordsworth Grasmere, an exhibition that opens in June 2022. The exhibition is part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project ‘The Romantic Ridiculous’ led by Drs Andrew McInnes and Rita Dashwood from Edge Hill University and co-produced with students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, Astley.
