Unlocking the Private Library is a symposium which will be held at Winchester College on Saturday 9 February 2013. It is organised jointly by the University of Birmingham and Winchester College, and arises from an AHRC-funded doctoral project, Collecting the Eighteenth Century at Winchester College.

This symposium will explore the potential of private libraries associated with schools, religious communities, homes and heritage sites. It is open to anyone interested in the past and future of private libraries as resources for scholars and communities. Speakers include Dr James Willoughby (New College, Oxford), Abbot Geoffrey Scott, OSB (Douai Abbey), Christine Penney (Hurd Library), and doctoral researchers working on a range of AHRC-funded collaborative projects.

The keynote address will be given by Mark Purcell, Libraries Curator to the National Trust.

The cost of registration, including lunch and refreshments, is £10 (£5 for students).
